Bass Kleph
July 25th, 2007 by Tom WilsonSomeone once said that “Bass Kleph writes the kind of tracks where the whole club does a double take, then bum-rushes the DJ asking, ‘What the fuck is this?!?’” It’s a dirty, bouncy, quirky, sexy, sensory assault of less-is-more tech/electro; a mash of straight beats and break beats, big bass and house treats. It’s that … well, it’s that Bass Kleph sound.
He describes the sound as a war on average, fought by Amazonian swimsuit models with machine guns, and he’s not too far off. DJ, producer, label owner/manager, mix engineer and radio show host, Bass Kleph seems to have a finger in every music industry pie in town. He’s made a big name for himself in the remix world. Within seconds of being dropped by DJ Icey at a pool party in South Beach, Miami, Bass Kleph’s remix of Robb G’s 12” Therapy seemed to get everyone’s attention – Dom (Stanton Warriors) was seen saying, “I need a copy, now!”
His remix of the Drumattic Twins for Finger Lickin’ Records won him the award of Best Remix at Breaks Poll 2005. His electro-rock remix of Amiel’s Be Your Girl crossed over into the mainstream with good results. Warner Records made it the title track of Amiel’s remix EP, and they shot a film clip for it in New York.
“… [Bass Kleph] is the best breaks producer in Australia …” – Dom B (Stanton Warriors)
Bass Kleph plays Halo in Hobart on the 28th of July.
